The Curragh Racecourse, Ireland’s most important Thoroughbred race track, is located in County Kildare, just 35km from Dublin City Centre. It hosts some of the most famous races in the world. CampbellReith was invited to submit proposals for a comprehensive redevelopment of the existing spectator facilities at the Curragh Racecourse. The objective of the redevelopment of this historic site was to create a world class facility whilst maintaining the full racing calendar which includes the Derby, Oaks and St Ledger.
Working with the client and other design team members, CampbellReith developed a phasing strategy for the demolition and construction works, which enabled the course to remain operational for all the classic races in the season.
The masterplan included the diversion of R413, Newbridge to Kildare Road and construction of a new hotel and reception building, incorporating a leisure/spa complex alongside the racecourse. The main phase of the redevelopment replaced the existing grandstands and associated facilities with some of the best grandstand facilities in Europe. As part of the redevelopment, a new foul water drainage system was installed for the whole of the Curragh Site to cope with peak race day attendances of 40,000 spectators.
