Chadwick Hall, Roehampton University

These fantastic new residences for the University of Roehampton by architects Henley Halebrown were shortlisted for RIBA’s Stirling Prize 2018. CampbellReith provided structural, civil and environmental services.

The buildings were constructed in the gardens of the Eighteenth Century Georgian villa Downshire House. Our designs included secant pile walls to retain areas around and under the buildings and our 3D Revit models were instrumental in helping the site team understand how to deal with the many changes in site levels.

The site constraints included archaeology, many important tree preservation orders and significant changes of level across the site.

We worked closely with the brickwork specialist to design coordinated solutions for the balcony landings which allowed the architect to deliver his architectural goals.

The feature staircase in the South East Block required careful detailing for the couplers to allow the placement of the precast units as well as close tolerances on the exposed concrete walls.

The Chadwick Hall project has won numerous awards including:

  • RIBA London Award 2018
  • RIBA National Award 2018
  • Wandworth Design Award 2017 – The Major’s Design Award in recognition of its outstanding contribution to design in the borough
