The UCLH Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) Centre, a specialist hospital dedicated to delivering the latest cancer treatment, moved a step closer to reality today. Following extensive collaboration between the design team and the UCLH clinical teams to refine the development proposals, a ground breaking ceremony has taken place this morning to celebrate the beginning of the construction works and the future of cancer treatment in the UK.
CampbellReith has been heavily involved since the initial stages of this major development. In addition to providing structural engineering design services, our team of specialist in-house geotechnical engineers, environmental scientists and infrastructure engineers have added significant added value, working with the wider design and construction teams to assist in delivering the optimum project solution.
PBT is a specific form of radiotherapy that provides a more efficient treatment for cancer patients, reducing the chances of damaging nearby organs and tissue and with less side-effects. This new high energy proton beam therapy programme run by the NHS will provide its services from two PBT centres in the UK, one in London and one in Manchester.
