CampbellReith is pleased to be part of the publication of CIRIA C733 that considers the risk of asbestos in soils during development, as both members of the Project Steering Group and sponsors.
The practice has assisted the preparation of the CIRIA publication, from the initial publicity launch, through to its development, and provided a number of good practice case studies contained therein.
CampbellReith pioneered the commercial application of many of the advanced risk assessment approaches to Asbestos Containing Soil (ACS) on the award winning shipyard remediation at Woolston Riverside.
This includes early application of soil dustiness testing and use of the Hodgson and Darnton risk assessment model specifically to contaminated land remediation. That in turn allowed a considered and proportionate approach to the complicated issues present.
In addition, along with its early publication of the Woolston technical case study in 2008, CampbellReith has actively promoted a more refined approach to the judgment of ACS through a number of industry seminars (BOHS, CIWEM, SoBRA and Brownfield Briefing Conferences) and its work on individual projects.
Whilst not a panacea for all issues, this publication should lead to a more consistent approach to benefit clients and technical professionals. It will act as a base for continuing developmental work by the Joint Industries Working Group, SoBRA and others.
